About Peninsula Ballet Theatre

Peninsula Ballet Theatre was founded in 1967 by Dick Ford and Richard Gibson as the non-profit performing vehicle for students in their ballet school, then Peninsula Ballet School. The company/school continued under this model with the school becoming known as Peninsula Ballet Theatre School. In 1971 the school was sold and under new directorship, the first professional dancers trained outside the school were hired to form a permanent company, a few also teaching at the school to supplement their incomes. Company class was offered as well as classes for the general public and serious ballet students.

The company now performs in venues throughout the Bay Area and East Bay. We have grown our permanent staff to five full time equivalents. In 1999, our volunteer auxiliary produced the first Annual Sugar Plum Ball as a primary fundraiser, whereas in 2000 we were poised to hire our first permanent professional dancers on an annual basis and we introduced a 45 piece orchestra to our Nutcracker production, which symbolized the great strides made by the Company and was further evidence that the model and vision developed by the Board of Trustees is one that is working well for the greater San Francisco Peninsula.

To take our Company to the next level and continue our commitment to artistic excellence, we are extremely happy that in the fall of 2004 Michael Lowe joined PBT as our new Artistic Director, while we have the privilege of Carlos Carvajal's continuing guidance as Choreographer, Director Emeritus. During Michael's first season, we presented some exciting new repertoire that was well received by local critics.
